The Center for the Study of Diversity (CSD) accepted proposals for its 2017 Faculty Diversity Research Grant Program. The purpose of this program is to promote interdisciplinary research and scholarly activities that will benefit the university campus and/or the local community, and further the CSD mission as outlined below. This year has the special theme:
Campus Climate at the University of Delaware.
Center for the Study of Diversity Mission:
The mission of the Center for the Study of Diversity (CSD) is to promote academic research and scholarship that facilitate dialogues about and understanding of the social and academic impact of diversity. The Center brings a broadly interdisciplinary focus to its activities, projects, programs, and publications on research and analysis, training, public scholarship, community projects, and information dissemination. The goals of these activities are to:
- generate and transmit scholarship about specific diversity-related issues both at UD and beyond;
- fund faculty and graduate student research and projects related to diversity;
- bring outstanding researchers and scholars of diversity to campus to share their expertise;
- communicate the results of the Center's research and scholarship;
- apply scholarship of Center faculty to community issues; and
- assist the Vice Provost for Diversity in identifying diversity objectives and information needs for the University of Delaware.
The Grant Program and the
2017 Special Theme
Every year, the Center for the Study of Diversity offers small grants to support faculty research, analysis, and public scholarship projects in a wide range of disciplines, including the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. With these funds, the Center aims to facilitate wider understanding of the social and academic impacts of diversity, and to inform and support diversity practices within our community. In 2017, the Center sought proposals that are exclusively focused on some aspect of the campus climate for diversity in the context of the University of Delaware. We encourage scholars to make connections between their proposals and specific aspects of campus climate mentioned in the "Inclusive Excellence: Action Plan for Diversity at UD" and/or President Assanis' Strategic Principle of "Building an Environment of Inclusive Excellence".
"We will continue to support and strengthen multicultural programming and activities that enhance the learning experiences of all students, and encourage honest and open campus wide dialogue about the complexities of human differences, ideological thought, and unique learning abilities. These activities enrich and sustain our collective mission of valuing and respecting diverse people and cultures as we work to make our campus more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. We will also put educational provisions and governing practices in place that allow us to vigorously uphold our principles of an academic community with a zero tolerance for bigotry, harassment, and hatred, empowered to challenge issues of social injustice and inequities in a spirit of unity, support, and respect." – Inclusive Excellence Plan
Grants will support worthy projects in the following areas:
Public Scholarship/Community Engagement. Scholarly based projects that involve students partnering with organizations beyond the walls of the University on goals and issues that impact UD's campus climate for diversity.
Research/Data Analysis. Original research and/or secondary data analysis that examines diversity issues and practices on UD's campus and their implications for and applications to UD's campus climate for diversity.
Policy Analysis/Research. Analysis of UD policy implications of diversity-related documents/published papers, public and/or campus policies, and institutional programs.
Applicants were strongly encouraged to seek matching funds from their departments.
The funding for these grants will be distributed in February 2017, and must be used within one year of receipt. No-cost extensions may be granted on a case-by-case basis, for up to one additional year.
Applicants who receive funding must agree to report on their work from time to time for the Center for the Study of Diversity community. By accepting funds from the CSD Faculty Diversity Research Grant Program, awardees agree to:
- Submit a two-page report on research planning, progress, spending, and outcomes (if applicable) within six months of receiving award funds.
- Participate in the Diversity Brown Bag Series by giving one talk and attending at least one other Brown Bag session per semester for the duration of the award.
- Submit a final report within ninety days of the end of the funding period.
